Story

Based on Psalm 19:14

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

Lyrics

Let the words of my mouth bring you praise (repeat)

Let the words that I speak and the thoughts that I think bring glory not shame unto your name.

Speak to me. Work in me. Forgive me for my sins. Breathe in me. Love through me. Let them see Christ in me.

Story

We came up with the music during a writing session at my home. I happened to highlight two beats of another song we were working on and said to Loren, "man that's funky ! We have to do something with that !" Those two beats became the foundation on which the tune was based. It was originally intended as an instrumental track. During my three hour ride back from taking Loren home I was just singing and was blown away at the amount of work we'd done in two days. We cranked out four tunes and they were all bangin' !  I was so excited that I was just praying and singing and I said "Thank you God, you blow my mind with the things you do.  When you're standing by my side there's nothing I can't do, I am invincible !"   My prayer and praise was really the "feltonized" version of what the Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengths me".

Lyrics

You blow my mind with things you do. You blow my mind, it's ture.
You blow my mind with your sweet love. You blow my mind, it's true.
When you are standing by my side there's nothing I can't do. You make me stronger than the test, I am invincible (repeat)

Music:Felton Offard-Lyrics:Steve and Amy Grissette

Story

I wrote and recorded the music in 2010. My original working title for the song was "Hugs and Kisses".  I just could not come up with a lyrical idea that I loved so I enlisted my friend Steve Grissette to help. He shared it with his wife Amy and they came up with the lyrics write away. They also did a wonderful job singing on the song ! I think you can tell they're in love.

Lyrics

You make my world come to life, you make me smile. And when I think about what you mean to me, you are always sunshine. Always Love.

Story

The music was recorded with some of my favorite musicians. Keyboardist Michael Mitchell, bassist John Toney, and YL Douglas on drums with yours truly on guitar. The additional keys added later my Loren McGee and I added some synth and live percussion.  Kevin Porter Jr. and Christopher Jackson did background vocals and Chris did the lead vocal.  This tune has Michael Mitchell showing his chops with two incredible synth solos.

The lyrics are quite universal, based on the concept of reciprocity but I took it a step farther and to reciprocity I added grace. There is an old african-american saw that says "you can't beat God giving, no matter how you try".  My song says that when you give God your best you can expect more than reciprocity. It's not just 'you get what you give'.  It's "I gave the best I could and God added a blessing to it".  Don't get me started !

Lyrics

As you sow, so shall you reap, that is reciprocity. When you sow, sow a good seed cause there's reciprocity.
Sow your seed and watch God work. You give your little bit and God does miraculous. When you give God your best, you can expect more than reciprocity (repeat).

If you want, if you need, you wanna see a miracle just believe in Him. Keep your faith in Him, There's a promise that he's always gonna keep. He'll never leave you or forsake you.

Story

This tune is written as an answer to Reciprocity. The two songs are also related in terms of key relationships.  Reciprocity ends on an F suspended chord. That ending is what composers have used for hundreds of years to give a piece an unresolved feeling.  Higher Law is in B flat minor so there is a Dominant to Tonic resolution at the end of Reciprocity going into Higher Law. That resolution was intentional.

Higher Law is intended to be a aural palette cleanser, coming after the dense tunes that preceded it. I played guitar and bass on it. Loren McGee does a wonderful rhodes piano solo, YL Douglas on drums and the lovely and talented Marsha Lynn Smith contributes the vocals.

Lyrics

There is a higher law than what we're acting on. There's mercy, there's grace, and there's love.

The Lord has so much more than what we're asking for.  There's mercy, there's grace and there's love.

Felton Offard-Loren McGee-Jarrett Johnson

Story

I was sent this song by my two very talented cousins, Loren McGee and Jarrett Johnson. They sent this tune to me with just Jarrett singing the melody. They didn't like the track they came up with and they wanted me take a fresh look at it. I came up with kinda bossa nova thing.  I recorded it with a live band that included YL Douglas, John Toney, Michael Mitchell.  We all loved the tune ! Loren came by the studio and couldn't believe the changes. He loved them as well.

Agape love is loosely translated as 'charity'.  In the lyric, we are invited to "open up our hearts and send agape love all across the world".

Lyrics

Send agape love, love, love. Send agape love all across the world. (repeat)
In a world only looking out for itself, what if we had a hand of love to express to someone else.
When you know, know of someone out there in need, why not take from what He's blessed you with and sow a seed of love..yeah.

repeat chorus.

Open up your heart, consider for a moment what He's done for you. It shouldn't be too hard after all He's brought you through.
He gives you more and goes beyond so take a lesson from this song, reflect His image onto everyone.
So why not ( why forgive and forget)? Instead of holding onto (heartache you'll one day regret). It's so much easier to (love and let go) keep it unconditional, cause that it what He asks of all of us so..
Send agape love, love, love. Send agape love all across the world. (repeat)

Story

I wrote this song in 2005.  It is a really simple prayer that has been prayed over and over by millions, "create in me a clean heart. This prayer famously prayed in Psalm 51:10 gets down to the core of our being, that we would be pure of heart.  Prince Reed, Steve Grissette and Marsha Lynn Smith lend the vocal harmonies to this song.

Lyrics

Create in me a clean heart (repeat 2x's)

That I might not sin against thee.

Story

I was in Philadelphia rehearsing for the Second National of Jersey Boys and finally got a day off after two plus weeks without a break.  I picked up my guitar and started working on this song. I can't remember my initial lyric idea but I emailed the tune to Chris Jackson and he came up with some instrumental ideas. He laid the bass, keys, and the drums but alas no vocal idea. So I'm driving to teach at Chicago State University and the lyric "Suenos" pops into my mind.  So I'm thinking, 'suenos has something to do with swaying' (wrong!!!!!) Suenos means 'dream' but I couldn't let that stop me. I put "Sway tonight" and Dream together and called it a day.

Now the funny thing is that Chris' wife is Latin/English singing sensation Veronica Vazquez and that knucklehead didn't know what Suenos meant either.  At least I've got an excuse, I'm not married to a woman Latin singing sensation.  Anyway, Chris and Veronica put some serious love on Suenos and it is a fun danceable song.  In fact this is the second husband and wife duo on this cd.  Who'd thunk it?

Lyrics

Baby come get me, let's sway tonight. Sway tonight.
Honey you got me, let's sway tonight. We'll do it right.
Suenos. Suenos. Suenos. Suenos. Dream

Story

During a whirlwind two days of recording, Loren was going through patches on my keyboard and I said, "what's that?!!!", we've got to use that. So we just vibed and came up with it.  It is a dreamy track that has a great groove. I'm really proud of this tune.

Story

This tune was originally thirteen minutes long :-)  Loren and I were vibing and playing our butts off and actually split the tune up. One tune was called Manna and the other Gilgal.  I said to Loren,  "I can really hear spoken word on this". Loren said he could as well and said he knew a really dope spoken word artists/rapper in Seattle.  When I got the track back I couldn't believe it ! Shakiah Danielson not only has a great voice and vibe, she is a serious biblical scholar.  In the tradition of the negro spiritual, she fuses the biblical story of Gilgal with the modern African-American experience. Just plain dope !

Loren McGee plays keys and drums on this one.  It is so funky!

Story

This is my homage to my heroes from the 70's. The title is taken from an ad lib that James Brown said in his hit "Superbad". I am a child of the 70's and grew up listening to James Brown, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton and other funkateers.  I had so much fun in my studio channeling James, Bootsy and George and Felton :-)    I played all the instruments on the track except the piano solo which was contributed by my old friend and Barry Manilow's music director, Ron Walters Jr. or R Dub 2.

I'm joined on vocals by my colleague at Chicago State University, DoLisha Miller-Pleasant who is a fabulous opera singer but here she is just jiving with me.  This tune is mad funky !

Story

In 2011 I was in Atlanta rehearsing for a tour and I was overcome by God's love. I was actually thankful that I had gotten a role in a TV series (The Playboy Club) on NBC. I think my praise lasted longer than the series. It only aired three times :-(

So I was thinking that I wouldn't have to take the Jersey Boys tour that would take me away from my family for long periods at a time but I had peace that even if I did everything would be ok.  I came up with this arrangement of this gospel classic.  It is primarily an instrumental version with a vocal bridge that I added.  Prince Reed and Marsha Lynn Smith provide the vocals yet again.

Lyrics

I won't complain.

I won't complain.

I won't complain. He has been so good to me.

Story

I was asked to write a mother's day song that the Ashro Records company could offer as a free download to their customers. I wrote the song and enlisted Chris Jackson to sing and Loren McGee to do the programming and I played guitar. I think it is a wonderful song with universal lyrics that truly express my and so many other's experience with their own mothers. I think most people can relate to this song.

Lyrics

Verse 1
I remember like yesterday. You would take me by the hand and say “Baby be careful when crossing the street make sure you look both ways”.
Movin’ on to my first heartbreak when he said he had to go away. “There’ s other fish in the sea please believe me you will love again”.

Pre chrorus
Now that I am older and I’m finding things out on my own. I realize your sacrifice so I had to pick up the phone and tell you that…
Chorus
Mama, God never made a greater gift than mama. It’s true. There’s no greater love, she’s sent from above. She’s God’s blessing for you. Mama it sounds so simple but true there’ll never be another you. So I had to call and say just how I feel, I love you momma.

Verse 2
Dear mama how you feel today ? I know sometimes you have those aches and pains. “Mama’s all right baby these things come with time and I can handle it”.
Oh mama I just wanna say. Wish that I could take the pain away. “Baby don’t fret cause God ain’t through with me yet. I still got work to do”.

Pre chorus
Chorus
Bridge: Though the years they take the toll. Your love is always warm. You help me carry on. When I’m weak you are strong……
Chorus

Story

I had just left Jersey Boys and was tired of the poppy sound I was playing every night (although the 4 seasons is great music).  I just wanted something more earthy.  I'd bought a new dobro and was fiddling with it when I came up with the opening motif. To me it sounded like 'wake up abigail.....wake up abigail', so that's what I titled it. It's really a lullaby with some slide guitar in the middle to add tension.  It's my wife's favorite track on the cd, although she did ask me, "so who's Abigail"?  I just laughed and told her the story.

Story

I have enjoyed this song for years and decided to do a unique version of it. Loren McGee sent me the solo piano part that he played to my guitar reference and we couldn't get things right. So I played he melody on guitar and then quoted Psalm 23.

The setting for this version is verdant and peaceful. It is a great way to end an album or just meditate

Latin funky groove with the lyrics based on Romans:38-39

Romans 8:38-39

New International Version (NIV)

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Lyrics

Lyrics,

I am persuaded, I'm gonna make it. I'm dedicated. I will not stop nor turn around (repeat).

Neither death nor life not power nor things that are present nor things to come. Nothing and n one shall be able to separate us from the love of God.

Rise

Lyrics

This too will pass, though it lingers on. It cannot last, it's just a season in time.
For as high as you dream, as hard as it seems there's a miracle. There's an open door.
You ask yourself why is this happening? What have I done to be treated so cruel?
But hold on to your dreams as hard as it seems, seize your miracle, walk through that open door.

And you will rise, rise form the ashes of dispair. Rise, rise knowing life's not fair. Never give up, never lose hope, you're made to rise. Never give up, never lose hope, you're made to rise.

Now you've worked hard and you've been faithful. So hold your head up high and receive your reward. For as high as you dream, as hard as it seems there's a miracle. There's an open door.

And you will rise, rise form the ashes of dispair. Rise, rise knowing life's not fair. Never give up, never lose hope, you're made to rise. Never give up, never lose hope, you're made to rise.

Lyrics

Worship you, Lord I want to worship you. Singing love songs to you just like Jesus.
And seek your face, every day I want to seek your face. Lord if I can seek your face then I'll be more like, more like...

I want to be more like Jesus. I want to be more like Jesus. That's my prayer today.
I want to be more like Jesus. I want to be more like Jesus. Please make me more like him.

I want to heal the sick. With your power I want to heal the sick.
Oh Lord, if I can heal the sick then I be more like Jesus.
I wanna do what's right. In spite of myself I wanna do what's right, and not what's in my mind Lord. Then I'll be more like...more like.

I want to be more like Jesus. I want to be more like Jesus. That's my prayer today.
I want to be more like Jesus. I want to be more like Jesus. Please make me more like him.
Hold me, shape me, direct me, oh play your melody.
